When there's a soloist happening out front, I can push him along, and then when it comes to my solo, I can do whatever the hell I want, which is basically the way I like to do it. Career. We came off the road for several months to work in the studio, and I thought maybe I should try some other way to keep myself feeling fit, because I was feeling tired and weird all of the time. When I was with Zappa, I wanted to learn to play vibes, and I wanted to be able to read faster, so I took some les- sons from Mitchell Peters, who is with the L.A. Philharmonic. Well, I thinklooking back, I was sort of a workaholic. There was several medical, non-surgical choices, and I tried all of those. They wanted to get on the road, and I said Well, lets just get the video done. So we got the When You Love A Woman video doneI was packing my whole left side in ice between takes. The iconic singer appeared onstage with his former bandmates as they each gave speeches, but did not perform with the group later in the event. Especially Journey and Foreigner. But I don't feel I want to jump on that particular bandwagon. The more you play, the less they hear. I think they thought I was just going to leave the group and go solo and tell everybody to gowhatever. The group released many albums from 1969-1970, including a self-titled work, Doctor Dunbar's Prescription, also to Mum From Aynsley . But before that it was ridiculous. On 1987, The former was transformed from surly blues rock strut to an impossibly glossy radio-metal anthem, replete with a suitably over-the-top guitar solo from guest musician Adrian Vandenberg, whose own titular band had had a big hit with the ballad Burning Heart in the US in 1984. I was on an ELP tour, and Carl Palmer was using a sequencer, so he had that happening. Journey got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame a few years ago. I leave a gap on the downbeat and upbeat so if I want to play the snare there, it cuts right through without being diminished by the low-end sound of the bass drum. After not having played on stage for several months, that was a lot of stran, but after wards I felt like I could have gone on and played some more. So that was a big part of the pressure? That was pretty interesting and he was a great help. Those songs, and those tracks. Every song the band did lasted about 25 minutes, and they were all the same structure head; solos; head. I'm 22, 23 years-old and I like to play up high, and he suggested to . Because theyd had a certain amount of success without me, and they were wondering, once I joined, Is this the right direction? I could tell that. I completely understand how they felt and why, and I want to make sure thats clear. As a result, Revenge was recorded in two stages between legs of Coopers world tour. And the theory coming from Steve, and I kind of understood it, was that everybodyll go out and be able to express themselves musically in some other areas, and then when we reconvene, perhaps we will have discovered or found things that we can bring to the group to help the group evolve. So I did. I sing with myself all the time I'm playing. I Thought Mentalphysics Was New-Age Nonsense. Now, I'm not playing with the idea filling in a lot, but If I were to go back and play with Zappa, I'd play as much now as I did then because Frank's music creates more freedom. It was actually overkill for me, but it was interesting because it was so different. And I had always been a big fan of Jan Hammer, the keyboard player that was playing with John McLaughlin and Mahavishnu Orchestra, and was doing all the Miami Vice themes at that time, the music for the show. We toured probably nine, ten months a year, and the other two months that were left, we were in the studio making more new music, and then wed get right back out there. And we still waited, even though we had things goin on. I sat in the balcony and had Peter Green and John McVie with him. Other times, I might just powerhouse it right through, depending on the time I have, what the audience is like, and what's going on. It worries the hell out of everybody else because I'm changing things all over the place and it almost sounds like a drum solo. We lived together when I first joined the band. He's been with me since about 1976, so he's really got it down. I used a small, jazz Ludwig kit for the Grand Wazoo and Waka/Jawaka aibums-a little 20" bass, an 8 x 12 tom-tom, and a pair of 14 x 14 floor toms. Nowadays I get complaints about long drum solos, but in those days they wanted me to keep on going so they could go over to the bar and have a drink. On the next take, I know what should be happening. I just thought it was part of the aging process. I look at people like BB King and I go, man, God bless em. It sounds progressive, and Neals singin on it, he obviously doesnt sing like you. But that was his open door, to go do it, and that was sort of the beginning of the demise. So after Neal did his second solo album, I went to LA, and in about three weeks, I wrote Street Talk, which was a bit of a nod to the earlier band, and to the bass player whod passed, and with some great studio musicians and cowriters, we just knocked the record out and we released it. I did manage to learn a lot about music by looking at it and trying to discern what was going on. But Im embracing it. RM: You're not opposed to electronic percussion in principle? With the smaller drum, I can get a more solid, compact sound, which is better for the audience out front to hear. Weve tried out a few singers. On the ZappaCast, you mentioned Aynsley Dunbar and Terry Bozzio being in the audience at one show - did you meet them after? Lets go fuckin be Journey again. I wouldnt have done that if I had any desire to leave the group. And as long as, at the end of the night, I heard what they felt about it, then I was good to go. I would read in down beat that so and so's new record was out, I'd go to the shop and never see it. Hearing the music rather than counting it is always the best way. I used to always push for that when I was playing on stage. RM: What exactly is traditional jazz in England? AD: Yes, less overtones and more solid "thump," which is what I'm after. AD: I went out with Flo and Eddie and played around the world with them. And the songs I gotta tell you, it was unbelievable. So I held out a little bit, cause I wanted to know. Then when it came to the rest of the kit, I could get used to the sounds and the feel of the drums one at a time, and not be over powered by the immensity of the whole situation. I just told somebody that, a couple weeks ago, a writer that Im working withmy own voice is sometimes difficult to hear. So I flew out there, hung out with the band. We finished the record. In England, at that time, American records were about four years behind. He plays rhythm guitar and sings it for a while and we just add our parts to it. They wanted us to get on the radio. And then, there's Cynthia Albritton, known now as Cynthia Plaster Caster, who collects a somewhat different kind of keepsake: plaster molds of famous rock and roll penises. I met him when Journey was opening up for Jeff Beck, before Steve was in the band. RM: Do you do anything to stay in shape so that you can playas hard as you do night after night? I went down there and sat in with him, and boy, it was horrible! And the reason I didnt realize that I was an alcoholic is that I didnt have to wake up in the morning and pound down a six-pack. [After the Raised on Radio tour] Steve Perry just came up and said, Look, Im burnt, Im toast, I need to take a rest. And so in the middle of a tour, he just pulled out. The guitar solos are note for note just like the album. PERRY: Yeah. So that night we got a doctor to give me a shot. So I have a lawsuit against them. We wanna know when youre going into surgery, because we want to tour. And yknow I didnt feel like major surgery was a band decision. I had not opened that up in over ten years. But most of the time I had a free hand. And then the next three days after that, I was terrible to be around. He's on the "A Hard Road" album, along with Peter Green. Its been painful. Its been your band longer than it was ever Steves band. Have you followed whats gone on since then, at all? I got my review at the end of the night. I spent 18 months with them, but they were going through a slow decline. Whether its making a movie or making music. Since 1968, Cynthia has cast over 48 famous rock singers', guitar players', and managers' penises. In my lifetime, to see another generation embrace this? I thought, Okay. Cause Id called Jon to try to put it back together. So it felt freeing at some level to be a free agent, in 98, cause the industry was really changing, and the Internet was becoming a big thing, and I thought, Gee, the futures kinda wide open. And then [laughs] then I just got this unbelievable freaky drive, which shows the neurosis of the singer-songwriter. And sell some records. The manager sent me apiece of legal paper with about ten different things on it, written out by hand, and said, "Sign it." That's how I look at rock and roll drums, or drumming as a whole, actually. And I think that we accomplished a lot together. I think thats getting a little into the area of conjecture. I joined the band in 1978. But Im just not in it for the money. You dont seem to understand how much I wanted to sing in that band. . You want to leave it so you're backing them, rather than leading them. I was taken to London by the Mojos. You feel like youre on a high-wire all the time. Do you find that the smaller drums give more "punch"? And I only bring that up to tell you that, at some level, every one of those tracks are like a painting in a gallery to me, and theyre precious to me. And so[sigh]Ive tried to maintain that thats just not what theyre for. We were all lovin it. It was what I just said on tape. Steve! When someones fingers get calluses on them, the guitar doesnt hurt so bad. We mastered the record. In these days, it would actually be respectable! The name wasnt settled yet. Using your fingers makes em better. It starts way in the back, over a railing, and it rolls up to the front. During one of my first gigs with them, they gave me a drum solo. Well, Steve came out with us and started hangin outhe was hangin with me, actually, and we were roomin together, and I pulled out an acoustic guitar, and one of the first songs we wrote, in about a half an hour, was Patiently. And that just kinda came out of nowhere. And our bass player Richard Michaels got killed in a Fourth of July holiday accident on the freeway. My feeling at that point is very simple: What am I going back to now? I don't want to do it like some of the clinics I've seen where the guy will come out and say, . We did it in a month, again, with some down time. I just love it. And he played the tape for em, and they werent sure. I was concerned that it would play while somebody got whacked. I'll just leave it awhile and see what else develops, and then I'll get something. So, because of his wishes, thats the way things go down. I like to do studio work for people who want me-where they respect what I'm doing and why. And what that meant was that there was a period of time where I always felt, from Neal, that I had to prove myself worthy of the position I was trying to occupy in the group. Well, he did the same thing, way before we did! RM: Do you structure your solos any particular way? And I tried to get to David Chase to try to thank him, and I have yet to be able to. Even now, I need a teacher to drive me so I practice and advance more. If I did I might start breaking drums. AD: I used to do a lot of push-ups, sit- ups, and all that to keep myself feeling healthy, but I was still getting drained. So, there are certain parts of the song which have to be played the same because they are part of the music. Youd think that a certain amount of success would squelch certain drives. So when I hit the scene in Liverpool, I startled a lot of the drummers that were hanging around, because they hadn't heard of me and all of a sudden I was getting gigs and playing over the place. And I said, I am _not _gonna tour and sit on a stool. No. Grand Wazoo was charts. Next night. They couldn't see any further than where they were at. And so I think Ill play, probably until the day I die. A lot of times, that goes down a lot better than sitting there being a technician. I been uplifted when he called, but when heard "country/western" I went back down. This is the healthiest Ive ever been, and I think its the best Ive been playin.
